How can you not get romantic about baseball ? – Billy Beane

Bennett Miller’s Moneyball is about Billy Beane (Brad Pit) who is the general manager of the Oakland A’s who after losing three of his prime players of the team desperately tries to find the replacements. He later meets Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) and with him he puts an end to conventional methods of selection, by opting for statistical analysis over performances as he changes the history of baseball forever.

The acting in this movie is fantastic. Huh, who Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill? I saw Billy Beane and Peter Brand on the screen. They transform into these characters that you can’t get for even one second that they are acting. Philip Seymour Hoffman is also awesome. Chris Pratt is top notch in his role and so are the numerous actors.

The direction is stupendous. How Bennett Miller transformed a sort of a over-made type of subject mater and transformed it into so much fun is unbelievable. The way these characters move and talk and just the way they even sit is magic. This not a sports movie, not at all. This is an emotional drama about a man trying to change something which cannot be easily changed, like Jerry Maguire. The sports aspect is just a canvas to paint this heartfelt movie. The cinematography is superb. That opening scene with Billy Beane sitting in an empty stadium just took my breath away. The movie has very smart editing and juggles easily with its timelines.

The score is superb and The Show brought tears to my eyes in the climax. I don’t know how Micheal Lewis gets all his book adaptations right. The Blind Side, and now this ! I have no knowledge baseball because cricket is the religion of us Indians and quite honestly for the movie, I don’t think you need to.

What is it about Brad Pitt ? He does all this horrible movies and comes out with ones like this. Jonah Hill gives his 100 % to everything he is in and I was amazed by the fact that he gave such a controlled performance. He is usually the energy of every movie he has been in but he is so serene.

And most attractive is the father-daughter relationship of Billy and his daughter. It never gets over he top, like for eg. his daughter doesn’t cry and beg while he leaves and all that crap. And the movie has superb dialogues which is more of an exposure to the characters than their actions.

Moneyball ain’t a sports movie it is a beautiful engrossing mesmerizing drama. With actors getting an A in their quota, the movie ends up breaking all the shackles of the genre cliches just like its protagonist. (And The Show song was just a cherry on top)

I would like to see if you could come up with an interesting angle to all ur movie reviews and that is “The high point”. we had learnt in Film studies. as in every movie has a peak from where it starts falling.. its not the regular point but a situation where the character does some thing vch bring the high point and then the movie falls. Pls show us this angle if possible coz it would be interesting to see spcly in ur writing! Cheers! Well done!
