Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam Review

There is a scene in which after undergoing speech therapy, Sudhi gives a speech in his school. After finishing the speech, there is a moment of relief on his face. Eyes moistened, face smiling as if he had undergone some kind of redemption. It is one of the most emotionally charged moments I have seen in recent cinema history and left an imprint on my mind.

I haven’t seen a movie for a long time which has had an impact on my life as this one. It is one of those harrowing, emotional experiences that come rarely in movie-watching experiences.

As a nerd, I have always had problems. And no, no one teases me or anything like that. As a nerd, the biggest problem is you have difficulty in expressing yourself. Your mind is filled with ideas about so many topics and no cares to listen about them. I related to this movie. It is about a man who struggles to get through life normally because of his stuttering problem. But what is it really about ? It is about a man who is frustrated with the fact that although he is intelligent, he cannot express himself.

If it was a movie about stuttering, it would have been a huge failure. But it is about the incapability of expressing oneself. It never exploits the stuttering part as well, nor is it exploited to bring about emotions. It is shown as a problem. The movie has emotionally charged moments which will definitely bring you to tears. The performance by Jayasurya is one for the books. What a great balanced portrayal it is ! The chemistry between TG Ravi and KPAC Lalitha is endearing.

Movie is humorous in nature and has plenty of laugh out loud scenes. There are particularly two vertigo shots that completely change the dynamics of the movie and this camera technique hasn’t been put to such use since Vertigo itself.

Did I like the movie ? No, I loved it. I think after 20 years, I will still be thinking about this movie. How it changed my perspective about life, how it inspired me, and how it changed my life forever. It is one of those rare cinematic experiences which I can truly, and proudly, hail as great. Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam is a masterpiece.
